John Edwards was born in England, worked in Ireland, and moved to Nova Scotia in 1978. His research interests focus upon the constituents of group identity, with particular attention given to language in its many social aspects. He has lectured and presented papers on this topic in some thirty countries, and his work has been translated into half a dozen languages. Professor Edwards is on the editorial boards of ten international language journals, and is the editor of the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, now part of the Routledge publishing empire; he also edits a companion series of books. His own books include Language in Canada (1998), Multilingualism (1995), Language, Society and Identity (1985) and The Irish Language (1983). He has a number of new books in various stages of preparation, to be published by the university presses of Cambridge, Oxford and Toronto, and by Palgrave Macmillan and Continuum. Professor Edwards is also the author of about 250 articles, chapters and reviews. He is a member of several psychological and linguistic societies, as well as scholarly organisations for the study of ethnicity and nationalism. He is a fellow of the British Psychological Society, the Canadian Psychological Association, and the Royal Society of Canada.
